Ruben Gutierrez

Music Technology

Mr. Gutierrez joined the music faculty in 1995 as director of Commercial Music, Composition and Music Technology.  He teaches students on equipment used in commercial music, such as digital audio recording formats, MIDI keyboards, controllers and tone modules, computer sequencing and notation, computer software and hardware in both Windows and Macintosh operating platforms.  He has taught varying levels of music theory courses, sight singing, jazz piano, directed the university jazz singers, and jazz to rock courses in his tenure at UTEP.

Mr. Gutierrez professional career includes several levels of music production in El Paso recording studios and studios in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Mexico City.  He is a MIDI keyboard and tone module consultant and has performed, recorded and transcribed music for Telarc International recording label. He has done production, sequencing, transcription, and performance/recording for local and regional companies including Miss Texas USA, Pepsi Cola, El Paso Natural Gas, El Paso Brass Quintet, Women’s Missionary Union in Birmingham Alabama, El Paso Symphony, and The Catholic Diocese of El Paso. He also served for two years on the board of directors of the American Federation of Musicians Local 466.

In order to promote his efforts in commercial music, music technology, and jazz piano as part of the UTEP music faculty, Mr. Gutierrez released a collection of his works in a C.D. entitled “Beveled Facets” with Shade Records recording label featuring his Latin/Jazz piano style.  The C.D. is being distributed nationally through Bayside Distribution and is available at Tower Records, Best Buy, and Barnes and Noble all over the country.  He recently returned from a West Coast tour, lecturing on latin jazz piano styles at University of Arizona in Tucson, UT San Antonio, latin jazz history at Embry Riddle Academy, numerous radio interviews, clinics, and performances including the Conservatorio de Bellas Artes in Chihuahua Mexico, and the famed Los Angeles jazz club “The Baked Potato.”  

Pacific Northwest  performance/lecture series during the spring semester with his group “The Latin Jazz Exchange.”  Performances in Seattle, Eugene, Ashland Oregon, and Tacoma Washington the week of March 18th 2001.  Ruben also performed  the North Texas Latin Jazz festival in October 2001, and the Lake Wales music festival in Florida in March 2002, Mesilla New Mexico Jazz Festival in October 2003, La Vina Wine Festival May 2003.  Latin Jazz Exchange performs regularly in trio-septet settings locally at the Camino Real, Sunland Park Race Track, and Panache Night Club.  Side projects include producing and recording local groups (St. Pius X chorus summer 1997 and 2003), and also performs with the Rock-R&B group D'fuze.  The Latin Jazz Exchange also  performed the El Paso Arts Resources World Music Festival, August 4th, 2002 for an audience of approximately  10,000 people.

Ruben is currently writing a piece for piano and orchestra, a suite for wind ensemble, and a piece for choir and brass quintet.   Ruben also completed arrangements for Big Band of his compositions to be premiered June 3rd, 2003 at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

Ruben's independent release entitled "Reposado" featuring the trio in a live concert (Ricky Malichi and Pancho Anguiano), along with studio tracks of the Septet, scheduled for release Fall 2003.
